Happy birthday, iPhone! While it’s true that Apple announced the original iPhone at Macworld San Francisco in January of 2007, if officially released to the public on June 29, 2012. Apple has now sold 250 million iPhones and has generated $150 billion of cumulative revenues worldwide according to a recent press release from research firm Strategy Analytics.
The iPhone business alone is now bigger than Microsoft. Take a moment to let that sink in. This single product is now responsible for more yearly revenue than all of Microsoft’s businesses put together. As someone who worked for Microsoft during their heyday this fact absolutely floors me! If you thought that was unbelievable then listen to this: According to Business Insider, the iPhone business likely now generates at least $30 billion in profit per year! That makes the iPhone ecosystem more profitable than the entire businesses of GE, Microsoft, Google, and Walmart!
After seeing the successes of the first five years of this platform and the wonderful innovation in the app development ecosystem, I just can’t wait to see what the next five years will bring!
